Go Lady Bears!

Oh my gosh- what a great game last night at the regional basketball tournament in Sitka. We listened on the radio. How fun was that to hear the Haines Lady Glacier Bears beat the Metlakatla Miss Chiefs in overtime? And Riley! I almost died for her when she was fouled attempting a three pointer when we were behind by three with about 20 seconds to go-- what terrible pressure! And then she sank all three! The volunteer announcers, Doug Olerud from Olerud's Market Center and my neighbor Lyle, a retired teacher and  former basketball coach, could hardly contain themselves it was so thrilling.  Doug said, "I thought the store gave me this gray hair, now I'm thinking it's from basketball." It was a roller coaster of a game-- the girls had been up by 14, then down by 7, then came back to tie at the buzzer and then to win in overtime. My goodness. I could just imagine my son-in-law, Coach Elliott and assistant coach Stuart DeWitt scribbling on the white boards in the time outs, urging the girls to be calm and aggressive, dueling traits that are so difficult to balance in a big game. Or anytime. There is nothing like an important basketball game for learning life lessons. In the game before, the boys did not have as much luck against the Metlakatla Chiefs. As Lyle said, it's hard to go up against guys about a foot taller than you,  "and a good fifty pounds heavier."  There's only so much you can do. But again, they gave it their all, and that's a kind of win, too. The boys play again this morning, and the game will be broadcast on KHNS at 9:45. Miracle of miracles, the girls are playing for the regional championship and a ticket to the state tourney in Anchorage at 11:30 against the Craig Lady Panthers. Stand by your radio and cheer really loud. (First, you should get out for a walk this morning if you can-- as the weather is changing, and snow and rain are in the forecast.)
