A Few Things to Know for This Week

Wear your ice grippers! There's ice under this lovely new snow, even on the beaches and trails.  (Micro-spikes on a chains are available at the Back Country Outfitter and are the best for all-terrain hikers. )A trekking or ski pole might be a good idea too-- Also, the roads are pretty slick so drive carefully. The borough crew has done a great job getting them cleared for early risers. Thank you Ralph, and thanks too to Carlos and Andes for making the Chilkat Center warm again, and for the well-prepared-for-the -weather-taking- a-lot- more- time-to-get-anywhere life guards who have opened the pool at 6:00am in spite of these heavy overnight and early morning snowfalls. If you need a smile take a drive at dusk or dawn by the cannery and see the "Marry Me!" sign in white lights on a stack of fish totes. Yup, Harry asked Genny and she said yes. How sweet is that? There is yoga tonight at 5:30, and then not until Thanksgiving morning at 8:30 in the school as part of the Turkey Trot celebration. The run/walk follows at 9:45-- it's a great way to start off  the big feast day. The annual library holiday open house is Saturday 3-5 and it's free and everyone is invited to share music and food and good cheer and of course oooh and aaah at the beautiful tree. There are still some tickets left for the snowblower raffle, ask about them at the library. (The library and most public places, pool included, will be closed Thursday and Friday, and it won't be opened until the party Saturday.) Tonight at 6:30 in the Chilkat Center there's a free showing of Steve Kroschel's new film "Grounded", about earthing, or making sure you are connected to the earth's energy. In warm places walking barefoot on the ground does it. Here, you can buy a ground wire and a special pad to put your feet on (or sit on or sleep on.) The movie will explain it all, but apparently "earthing" this way has helped a lot of local folks with chronic pain and difficulty sleeping. The bank invites you in for a slice of pie and hot cider or coffee on Wednesday, and the Senior Center Thanksgiving dinner is also on Wednesday- a day early, and Jasmine asks that you let her know if you are coming.  From noon-2 on Thanksgiving Day both the Assembly of God and the Port Chilkoot Bible churches will host community meals. Finally, local merchants remind you to shop at home first, and they are encouraging that by opening their doors and offering big sales on Friday and Saturday.
