I am heading to Skagway for the North Words writing symposium this afternoon, it runs through Saturday and if you call Buckwheat you can still sign up. There is a regular ferry leaving at 11:30am and fast ferries depart later today at 3 and 5. The opening taco feed and kick-off is at 6 at the Red Onion. If you are in Haines there's a workshop in social networking for non-profits at the library from 2-4 hosted by Steve Vick, Tlingit story telling at the library totem pole park at 5:30, and tonight at 7 at the museum Yukon historian Michael Gates will talk about his new book on the Dalton Trail. I'm really sorry to miss that. There's also all kinds of summer reading fun and activities at the library, check the schedule when you stop in or call for details. 766-2545. Carol Clifton's paintings are on display at the Sheldon Museum, ladies golf night, a best-ball style of play good for beginners, is tomorrow night at 6, check with Tomi at the Parts Place for more information. Senator Lisa Murkowski will be in town Friday, listen to the radio for times and places of her appearances, or check with the Borough office. The king salmon derby continues this weekend, and Saturday there is a garden planting party at the Chilkat Center beginning at 9am. While not on the community calendar, the other big event in our lives is the annual visit of Papa Bob, my dad. Pray for sunshine, as he really likes to work on his skin cancer. Looking ahead-- June 8 is the deadline for the youth summer theater conservatory, Monday June 11 Blue Highway, a terrific blue grass band, will perform at the Chilkat Center at 7:30, and the big bike race is Saturday June 16th. I'm off now to get in another wet training ride before I pack and steam across the fjord.
