I live and write on Lingít Aaní, and gratefully acknowledge the past, present and future caretakers of this beautiful place, the Jilkaat Kwaan and Jilkoot Kwaan.

Dear Lisa,

It was nice to see the ‘Find the Good’ headline in the Empire today, following your speech. It’s a great way to walk in this world.

I am asking you to lead the charge for sanity following the school murders in Florida by demanding universal background checks, banning assault weapons, and banning modifiers to other weapons that allow them to work like assault weapons. No sportsman (or woman) uses an assault weapon, in fact, the best Alaskan hunters I know graduate beyond guns to bows.

Lisa, I had to pass a background check to legally adopt a child.

Think about that for a minute.

This is not a political issue. It’s a moral issue.

This is the first time I have ever wished we could trade places. I wish I were in your shoes right now because of the opportunity you have to Find the Good in this tragedy by doing good—real good– and legislating life-saving gun laws.

Kikkan seized her moment. Please seize yours.

Have Courage,

Heather
