I live and write on Lingít Aaní, and gratefully acknowledge the past, present and future caretakers of this beautiful place, the Jilkaat Kwaan and Jilkoot Kwaan.

Annie Dillard famously wrote that how we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives. My days have been spent with family and stories, and it turns out, that’s a pretty good life ( not that there aren’t plenty of years left.) I never planned any of this. It just sort of evolved.

Sometime last night, between the turkey and the pies, one of the sons-in-law asked Chip, if back when we got married, he would have taken a guess at how many grandchildren he would have, what would it be? Chip said, “I don’t know. I didn’t think about it.”

“But if you did, what would it be?”

“Maybe three or four?”
