Dancing Bears and Fiddles

The good news keeps on coming. The Haines cheerleaders, in the person of Shelly Turner wearing the bear suit, won the state championship in the mascot division. I hope Shelly does her routine for us at the Athletic Banquet in May. Also, the Skagway girls won the 2A state championship. We listened to the game on KHNS. It was not a barn burner. It was more like an avalanche. They won by the most points ever, about forty, or something like that. And the team is all coming back next year. If you want to congratulate them in person, and have fun in the sunny snow, head to Skagway for the Buckwheat Ski Classic this weekend. It is a great time. Tonight a little bit of the Vancouver Olympics come to Haines, with a fiddler and dancer who played in the opening ceremonies. April Verch is a Canadian national fiddle champion and will play and dance that Riverdance way at the Chilkat Center tonight at seven. If you are looking for something to do today, we will be folding the Hospice of Haines newsletters at noon at the library. The ski track is set at 25 mile and there is a good trail from Skyline on Mt. Ripinsky all the way up.
