I live and write on Lingít Aaní, and gratefully acknowledge the past, present and future caretakers of this beautiful place, the Jilkaat Kwaan and Jilkoot Kwaan.

Last night when the puppy woke me at 1:50  to go out to pee and poop (why he poops more at night I do not know). I pulled on a coat and boots and walked him  down the hard-packed snow path to the beach. There were stars, and a moon, and I could hear the ice moving in the river. I had been grumpy, but you know– it really was beautiful right then. I wished on a star that I were more organized. I wished I had chili in the freezer to whip out for big family lunches next week. I wished that a family in the Ukraine would be warm. That babies won’t get sick. Today, I may not even make it to church as it is me and the shop vac next door. I made a list and checked it twice and it is long. I asked Chip where we begin, and he replied with that favorite Anne Lamott line “Heath, bird by bird…”

And then there is this one, which is a good reminder anytime, but especially this (sometimes) demanding season:

“If you don’t believe in God, it may help to remember this great line of Geneen Roth’s: that awareness is learning to keep yourself company. And then learn to be more compassionate company, as if you were somebody you are fond of and wish to encourage.” – Anne Lamott
