I live and write on Lingít Aaní, and gratefully acknowledge the past, present and future caretakers of this beautiful place, the Jilkaat Kwaan and Jilkoot Kwaan.

I have been on vacation is all, cycling in Tucson with Chip for a week. On day three I said, “I feel guilty– no borough meetings, no blogs, hardly any emails– nothing but riding bikes in the sunshine, eating good food, soaking in the hot tub, and sleeping.. I mean, we aren’t doing anything. I’m not even walking the dogs.”

“It’s called a vacation,”  Chip said. (That’s my wise man.)

We left Haines on  a gorgeous, wintery, December day–  that’s Pyramid Island and my neighborhood from the plane.

…and more– I mean really? I live here!

We returned to green grass and signs of a deluge and weather almost as warm (but much damper) than Arizona. Also, and most importantly, still in one piece.

Chip saved water on laundry. (I told you he’s a wise guy.) Seriously, he did this every day.

And I signed a new book contract! With Algonquin again, which is so very wonderful.

But the best was seeing James and Molly and the kids in Juneau coming and going. I was so happy I forgot to take any pictures!

I’m back in the thick of it today, with an obituary due tomorrow, the primary grades’ Christmas concert at 6:30 in the Chilkat Center, and a delayed assembly meeting at 8:00 (so we can attend the concert.) The older kids concert is tomorrow night, same time, same place, and the Booster Club still has Christmas trees, just call Kim Larson.

It was a great trip, but I am so happy to be home.
