I live and write on Lingít Aaní, and gratefully acknowledge the past, present and future caretakers of this beautiful place, the Jilkaat Kwaan and Jilkoot Kwaan.

A fine morning, I mean.

The sun is up and it’s another good one.

I had a little melt down Easter, since grandmothers and writers– even friends and neighbors– are not considered essential services right now and we have to stay home. I know, that is very childish, and bad form, as they say, when home is so comfortable, and there are no cases of Covid-19 in Haines, thanks to all of us staying away from each other. I am protecting my grandchildren, I need to remind myself of that.

Here is something else that I think is important, and I want to remember: If I did not know about a pandemic on this morning, I would be fine. My morning so far would be the same as it always is this time of year, and as near to perfect as they come. It is a beautiful early spring day. I wish you could hear the thrushes, and the crows– and yes, the gulls and terns were even flocking up and feeding on something across the river —when I let the dogs out and checked on the receeding lawn glacier.

Riding out the highway, with no traffic, and our sturdy, sand-in-the-road-still bikes, my toes got cold, is all.

And at home, the same desk–

 Well, almost. (The Purell…sigh.)

I have been kind of busy reading Garden and the Dogs, and learning new skills, what with the video and uploading and all, it takes me a while– and a lot of double checking my notes–(I hope you have been able to watch it, if you want to. It does take time, and so I understand if you are busy.)

And there is this other, new, welcome addition to my day: Gmorning, Gnight. I  love this little book of tweets ( yes, there are some very nice tweeters), by Lin-Manuel Miranda. I’ve had it a while, it was a gift from one of my daughters, and I have only now really appreciated it. He calms the squirrels tearing around in my attic of a brain and is just the thing to begin (and end) the day with. (See, writers are essential!)

This morning’s advice:

“Good Morning.

Eyes up. Hearts up. Minds sharp.

Compassion on full blast.

*Sips coffee*

Okay, let’s go.”

(And its partner, for before bedtime– there are two on every page) is this:

“Good Night.

Eyes shut. Hearts open.

Minds calm. Empathy on full blast.

*Sips tea*

Okay, let’s go.”
