I live and write on Lingít Aaní, and gratefully acknowledge the past, present and future caretakers of this beautiful place, the Jilkaat Kwaan and Jilkoot Kwaan.

My daughter Sarah had to take a picture of the low tide view out the back door last night,

but I liked the inside scenery even more.

In real news– The Choose Respect walk for domestic violence awareness and prevention is today at 11:30 on Main Street,  the revived downtown revitalization committee meets at 5:00 at the Rusty Compass, there’s choir practice at the museum at 6:00 (and yoga 5:30-7 at the Chilkat Center too.) Tomorrow the borough assembly will continue yet another long meeting at 5:30 in the assembly chambers, and at 7:00 in the school library there is a community reception for the candidate for superintendent, Ted Von Bronkhurst. If you see a Haines Dolphin, give him or her a pledge for Saturday’s swim-a-thon. It’s their big fundraiser of the year, and we all know how great the program is. (And how important swimming is to a coastal community. As one poster at the pool reminds us, the planet is 75 percent water.) Speaking of water, Leanne Converse, Art Jess’s widow, and a regular morning swimmer herself as Art was, said he’s being buried at sea, as soon as the  wind dies down. Not sprinkled, as in ashes, but his whole mortal coil. Friends have made a special casket per strict regulations about these things, and Tod Sebens will be escorting Art on what will be his final dip, in his whale watching tour boat. Art’s service is Saturday at 2:00 at the ANB/ANS Hall.

Also, don’t forget to dress up the dog for the Haines Animal Rescue Kennel’s spring dog fashion show fundraiser at Harriett Hall Saturday night. Pearl’s going, although I think she looks pretty good au natural, myself.
