Of course you can’t find courage if nothing bad ever happens to you, in other words if you never need it, or if you are never tested. And if you are never tested, then how do you know you have any virtue? That, folks, is the good in bad situations.
Still, practicing courage often requires divine intervention, so I pray a mash up of two closing prayers in the Episcopal church service when I am headed out from my safe home into any encounter that requires bravery that I’m not sure I have:
“Send me now into the world in peace, and grant me strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart– and to do the work you have given me to do.”
