I live and write on Lingít Aaní, and gratefully acknowledge the past, present and future caretakers of this beautiful place, the Jilkaat Kwaan and Jilkoot Kwaan.

Yes, it is Manic May– one day feels like summer and the next day we are back in March.  The first cruise ship of the season surprised us all yesterday. It wasn’t meant for Haines, as it was supposed to dock in Skagway but it was too windy so they pulled in here instead. As Bruce said on the radio when he announced the ship’s arrival “the population of Haines is about to double for the next few hours.” Oh, and the garden is begging for attention and all the seedlings really must get out of the house. There’s that, and the Northwords writers’ conference (May 29-June 1 in Skagway)  the bike race (June 15) a family wedding (June 22) and a book deadline (July 1).  Graduation is Monday night and the beer festival is next weekend. School’s out for the summer May 22. (Maybe it will be summer by then?) How can so much be happening in such a short time? Today is my youngest granddaughter’s birthday. Ivy is one! A good reason to slow down, and take a deep breath,  and be very grateful for all of it.
