I live and write on Lingít Aaní, and gratefully acknowledge the past, present and future caretakers of this beautiful place, the Jilkaat Kwaan and Jilkoot Kwaan.

8:30 am, 35 degrees, partly cloudy, north wind, flowing tide. Latitude: 59 degrees 14′ 1.68″ N Longitude -135 degrees 26′ 49.23″ W

The sun rose as I walked at 8:28 and will set at 5:01 today. We are losing about five minutes a day until December 21. It was quiet, no one else was out yet.I suppose since it is Saturday and it promises to be a nice day they are waiting for the sun to actually shine, which it will in an hour or so. There is a long twilight. Beth is off to see her family down south, so we have her dog, too. Four retrievers. It was like a Booth cartoon last night. It makes you laugh out loud it’s so nutty. Lucy stayed close on the walk, and she and all the dogs (thankfully) were not interested in this:

But she was curious about the hole the bear left after ripping up dandelion and burdock roots. As for me? I can’t believe how lucky we are to live with bears and salmon and winds and tides, and to walk into the sunrise after sleeping in to almost seven.
