I live and write on Lingít Aaní, and gratefully acknowledge the past, present and future caretakers of this beautiful place, the Jilkaat Kwaan and Jilkoot Kwaan.

“To be hopeful in bad times is not to be foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is not just a history of cruelty. It is also one of compassion, sacrifice, courage, and kindness. And if we do act, in whatever small way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. If we live now as we think humans should live, in defiance of what is around us, this in itself is a marvelous victory.”- Howard Zinn

My friend George thinks a lot about community, and how we live and work and contribute to making the place we love a better place. He wanted to encourage me to continue to fight the good fight here in Haines, and so shared these words from historian and activist Howard Zinn that have always been an inspiration to him, with me. I’m passing them on to you, because I believe they are crucial for people in the whole wide world to hear right now.

(Let us pray for marvelous victories! Amen)
