“The entire edifice of American justice is built on the conviction that there is no guilt without proof beyond reasonable doubt — and that there is no unimportant person, at least not in the eyes of the law.” – Bret Stephens

I am torn every day between loving this world and fearing for it– and us. I am trying to find balance in my resistance to the stuff that is not normal.
Yes, in Alaska I am horrified and angry about the racism, cruelty, stupidity. Cuts and threats to education and the arts. Canada ! Headstart and libraries. Climate. NOAA. Medicaid.Senior programs. Parks. Federal workers. The post office. Banned books.Banned words. The list is long and growing. I have sent those emails. Made those calls. Signed those group letters.
But today my telephone calls asked the Alaska delegation in Washington to follow the law and bring Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia home. Watching the Oval Office press conference with the El Salvadorian president turned my stomach. This is not what our country is. I miss the ivy over the mantel, too. I miss when the flicker of the fireplace was the flashiest thing in the background.
I sent an email to President Trump, too. The contact form is on the Whitehouse website. It’s easy. I asked him to bring Abrego Garcia back to the USA for Easter. I suggested he read Luke 6:20-36 for further instructions from Jesus. Here’s the thing that is really not normal: I paused when I saw that I had to fill in my full name, address, phone number and email.
