I live and write on Lingít Aaní, and gratefully acknowledge the past, present and future caretakers of this beautiful place, the Jilkaat Kwaan and Jilkoot Kwaan.

I am up early, and it’s dark, and I was emailing a friend and sending her some photos, and I realized I should send some to you too– as a thank you.

Yesterday by lunchtime I survived about a foot of fresh snow, a power outage while at the pool just as I was finishing my morning laps ( there are emergency lights in the locker room,  and the little tree in the hall has battery powered LED lights and they helped us find our coats and boots and the headlamps in our bags and pockets), teaching a third grade class how to write poetry during an earthquake (we “ducked and covered” as the principal advised over the PA system adding “this is not a drill” as the white board swayed, and then  crawled under the desks and waited until she gave the all clear. It was a 5.5 magnitude near Elfin Cove), — so I had a lot to be thankful for.

Today I’m ringing the Salvation Army kettle bell at Mt. Market as a karmic payback. Tonight is the last rehearsal for the Messiah sing-a-long. (6-7 at the Senior Center, all welcome.)   The combined Men of Note and Haines Acappella Women’s Chorus are leading the event on Saturday from 3-5 in the Chilkat Center, it’s not a concert, anyone can join us in the singing, and it’s free. There will be some solo performances too.

Tomorrow night my granddaughters sleep over so their parents can go to a Dirty Santa Christmas Party without them, and we can make pancakes with whipped cream for Saturday breakfast. Also, there are home basketball games both Friday and Saturday night, and one last holiday farmer’s market at the ANB Hall Saturday morning.

In other news, there has been a lot of holiday traffic in between snow storms.

And Trixie has been enjoying her favorite Christmas movies,

She stayed home during the parade though.

Of course it rained, but no one really minded since the wind wasn’t blowing and it was warm-ish. The fireworks afterward were the best ever and the longest show in memory.

Pearl prefers solitude and the peace of nature this time of year. May you find the spirit of the season wherever you are too, in your own ways.
