I live and write on Lingít Aaní, and gratefully acknowledge the past, present and future caretakers of this beautiful place, the Jilkaat Kwaan and Jilkoot Kwaan.

First, you need to know that the sun is out, and is supposed to stay out, and the ski trail is set along the Chilkoot River to the lake, and there’s a big swim meet and the Dolphins could use more timers for Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. It will be over by the Superbowl party at the Pioneer Bar. Call Leslie at  314-0543 to sign up or add your name to the list at the pool. The team is having a pasta dinner fundraiser Saturday from 5:30-8:30 in the school with vegetarian and meat sauces. Saturday night there are also ski movies at the Fort Seward Lodge beginning at 7:00 to benefit the avalanche forecasting and Haines snow report gang, including a pre-digital John Svenson epic that is not to be missed. The boys and girls basketball teams are in Craig this weekend. KHNS will broadcast the games tonight and tomorrow night at 7:30 and 6:30 I believe, but double check.

And congratulations to Fairweather skis and the Port Chilkoot Distillery for winning those big emerging business grants from Sealaska Corp. And did you see that Haines made the top five Alaska cruise ports in this month’s Alaska Magazine? I tell you– we are moving up in the world! If you want a Haines job that is fun and creative, KHNS seeks a program director. (Go to KHNS.org for more info.) Amelia is leaving the radio station to help her husband with their restaurant, the Fireweed.

And lastly, you probably should know it is supposed to blow like crazy from the north– storm force winds to 55 knots and seas to 11 feet are forecast for this weekend. So stay out of the wind, and enjoy the snow and the sunshine.
