I think the wind blew even harder last night than it did yesterday, and I know the drifts in the Fort are pretty impressive. My friend Fran and I busted through them in my Subaru to get to Morning Muscles at six. Luckily there was a lot of stretching. Last night Pearl jumped on the bed and so I ended up all twisted around and woke feeling like I’d been sleeping bent up on two airplane seats on the red eye from Seattle to NY. The news is that Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins won the recount, and so is now our rep. in Juneau. It was a busy weekend- The Scottish play was terrific on Saturday night, but for a while there I wondered if the curse that supposedly comes with it, had since just before the curtain on that cold very windy night, all the chained up fire trucks flashed through the darkness and stopped just below the Chilkat Centers for the Arts on Soap Suds Alley– it could have been a terrible disaster– but luckily was just a chimney fire– although my man Fisher, who played Banquo, and who stayed with us and enjoyed the fresh eggs from my hens, did managed to break three of Lady Macbeth’s toes in dress rehearsal. (It helped with her very believable scowling and bad temper.) Then Sunday in church we lit the Advent calendar and met Susie’s new old dog, a nine year-old Golden Retriever she just adopted named Dovey, and Mother Jan gave a sermon about some of the fear mongering and hate speech in the news, and said that our job is not to scare or threaten or judge– it is to be nice, to forgive, and to do our best to do good. Which was why the Uglys ice cream social at Haines Assisted Living was so perfect Sunday afternoon. You should have seen those tattooed and rough-ish looking guys serving up dainty cut glass dishes of ice cream and toppings to all the old ladies (and men, and plenty of young people, too). I think they were sweeter than the hot fudge. The choirs both sang, and Santa showed up, and even though the snow swirled all around us, it was as warm in there as Mexico.
