I live and write on Lingít Aaní, and gratefully acknowledge the past, present and future caretakers of this beautiful place, the Jilkaat Kwaan and Jilkoot Kwaan.

I just checked the weather and saw this alarming advisory from NOAA weather in Juneau for Haines Borough and Lynn Canal :

Special Statement
Statement as of 5:55 AM AKDT on October 08, 2014
…Heavy rain and strong winds Thursday through Sunday…

A very powerful low will enter the Gulf of Alaska on Thursday and impact Southeast Alaska beginning late tonight. Moderate to heavy rain will develop on Thursday over the central outer coast…then spread north and south as well as inland through Thursday night. Rainfall totals through Sunday evening of up to 5 inches are possible for some areas with most locations receiving 2 to 4 inches. Snow levels will rapidly rise on Thursday to above about 6000 feet…causing runoff. This…in addition to the heavy rains…will cause water levels for area creeks…streams…and rivers to rise. At this time no flooding is expected.

In addition…gale force winds are forecast to develop over the outside waters Thursday and possibly again on Saturday. Gales will also occur in Cross Sound. Strong gusty winds are likely for coastal areas. The combination of strong winds and heavy rain will increase the risk for mudslides.

This statement will be updated by 4 PM akdt Wednesday or sooner if conditions warrant.
