I live and write on Lingít Aaní, and gratefully acknowledge the past, present and future caretakers of this beautiful place, the Jilkaat Kwaan and Jilkoot Kwaan.

“I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve (or save) the world and a desire to enjoy (or savor) the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.”  ― E. B. White

I know I have shared this quote before, but it was on my mind today as I walked Jeff and Trixie at 10 am, low tide, sunshine, blue sky, no wind. The thermometer read 39 degrees but I don’t believe it. I didn’t even need a hat and I unzipped my coat. We didn’t want to come inside, but there is work to do.

At the pool earlier this morning I saw Deacon Vince, who blessed my place in Tenakee. (He visits the St. Francis Chapel there regularly.) He said he wished he had taken a picture of Trixie and me as he waved the hemlock branch with holy water on the four corners of the cabin and prayed for the peace and health of its inhabitants, now and forever.

I told him I’d see him at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 6:00 tonight for the Good Friday service. Tomorrow night I plan on joining the Episcopalians for the Easter Vigil at 8:30 in the Chilkat Center (the priest is in town for the first time this year), and then Sunday morning at 10 Chip and I will attend the Presbyterian Church. Jesus said love your neighbors, and I like seeing as many as I can. Ever since those awful isolated holidays of Covid times I crave community, and family gatherings.  This world needs as many of us praying for peace and love as we can get. The kids are coming for an Easter party in the afternoon.

As I was leaving the pool, Jeanette reminded me of the community dance party.

“The what?” I hadn’t heard about it.

“At four today KHNS is playing dance music and we are all supposed to stop what we are doing and you know…” and she did a little cha-cha-cha.

Yes, spring sunshine makes us all a little high. (And give in to the urge to clean.Looks like it’s time for me to do the window wash boogie.)
