I live and write on Lingít Aaní, and gratefully acknowledge the past, present and future caretakers of this beautiful place, the Jilkaat Kwaan and Jilkoot Kwaan.

In the last election, just 38% of the registered voters in Haines cast a ballot. Honestly, aren’t we more engaged than that? I still think that voting in Alaska should be linked to our permanent fund dividend check. If you don’t vote you don’t get one. I also think election days should be federal, state, and local holidays, so that working people and busy parents can get to the polls. In Haines, it’s pretty easy, since we have two polling places– the Chilkat Center for the Arts over behind Alaska Indian Arts off Soaps Suds Alley, and the Kelhini Valley Fire Hall on Mosquito Lake Road out the valley, and both are open tomorrow (Tuesday) 7am-8pm.

Please vote tomorrow!
